We Are the Academy Museum Workers United
Dear Fellow Coworkers,
We are excited to announce that we have reached majority support for our intent to unionize as Academy Museum Workers United (AMWU) with AFSCME Council 36.
A majority of eligible staff across departments have expressed their desire to form our union. We are seeking a better path forward, one in which we, as the founding employees of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, will have a voice to guide this institution to a more just, equitable, and inclusive future.
Working through the pandemic, we have brought to life the magnificent history of motion pictures and made it accessible to the vibrant communities of Los Angeles. We came together during the summer of 2021, months before the museum opened, to find ways to improve our safety and working conditions. For this museum to be successful, its workers must be safe and respected.
It is because we believe in this institution that we are forming our union. We believe in its mission to be radically inclusive, and we believe in our mission to service and be an agent of positive change in our community.
Our vision for positive change includes, but is not limited to:
- Job security for all workers
- Fair and livable wages
- Increased transparency
- Safety
- Opportunities for advancement
- Management accountability
Now that we have reached majority support, we ask that management recognize Academy Museum workers United as our union. We hope to work together with museum leadership to ensure a fair and equitable contract. We have much work ahead to help solidify the foundation of this new institution and set industry standards for working conditions at cultural institutions across Los Angeles.
Please join us in our efforts.
